Roses in the Rain

While on my rounds last evening, talking with the greenery, I noticed several new roses had bloomed. When I got closer, nose to nose with them, I saw that there were many more buds waiting to open. Many more. These are the old-fashioned roses that smell the way a rose came into this world to smell. I promised them I'd be back in the morning to take their picture. So, this morning, while the rain came softly down, I kept my promise.

It looks to be a good year for the roses.

I'm going to miss this man. His music helped shape my life. Thank God for youtube, radio and records. Here's George:

  3. The roses are beautiful. Some of the cultivars are spectacular, but old fashioned garden roses still are the best. As for George - do you know I had to go to YouTube to find an example of his singing? I couldn't remember his music at all. On the other hand, when Slim Whitman died this week, it was a great grief. This is a favorite, as my dad used to sing along with it when I was very young and he was teaching me to dance.

    1. I grew up with the music of slim. "North Wind" among my personal favorites. Isn't it wonderful to have dad's who sang and loved music?

    1. Thanks, Cat. it is a sad song, but so many of his were, and he sang about life, that's for certain. But, so much good, too...

  5. ah nose to nose with roses ... nothing like it ... and to smell like roses? oh, joy. roses are still my favorite flower. the real ones. beautiful morning dew hanging on 'em. gonna plant me some now that I've hung up my traveling wheels...

loved George Jones... his "I Stopped Loving Her Today" is just the most heart heavy tear in your beer song ever made. jeeeeeez what a song ...

loved the story Tammy Wynette told one time ... on Johnny Carson? I think so... about his drinking days ... they had just divorced ... oh, lord what another tear jerker song ... said neighbors would call her telling her that George was rolling down the street on his power lawn mower ... with a bottle.... got arrested.... said he told the officers ... don't worry my little wifey's on her way ... not verbatim, of course ... but she said ... yeah, funny now but then? and it happened way too often...

He really cleaned up and kept on living and singing... lots of great music

    1. Hey You, I didn't realize you had hung up your traveling shoes, thought maybe it was just a temporary sitting spell.

That is one very sad song, maybe the best ever... so many crazy George stories. He and Tammy had a true love, hard as it was to keep it free from all that craziness...

He left this world a better place and he left a better man, I believe. And that's what it's all about.

  6. I live in an upstairs apartment, but I fell in love with a rose at the garden shop the other day and bought it. I might try to find a place to plant it where I can see and smell it. The smell was heavenly and that was exactly why I had to have it! :-)

  7. Perfect, in every way! The roses here are rambling up the arbor, their scent trailing not far behind. Right now, they are at their peak on the arbor, but, have been prolific all across the area. A good year for roses, Teresa, glad they are opening up in your neck of the woods.

  8. We have neglected our roses this year. I finally called someone and asked him to take care of them for us. They deserve the very best.

    1. They do. I had to uproot some bushes this spring that had been very unhealthy for some time and showed no signs of improving. It was very hard on me, but it was the right decision. Now, the healthy one is bursting with blooms!

  11. I'm not fond of the fragrance of roses but they are a delight to see. My mother loved roses and I still have some of her china with big red roses.

  13. Hej Teresa, no scent is as lovely as the scent of an old-fashioned rose. I love roses, my favourite flower, lots of peoples' favourite flower. There are also many wild roses now, little simple roses but so sweet and sweet smelling. The world out there in the countryside is beautiful now. And I'll say again that you've got a lovely garden Teresa! What a beautiful rose.....

I like his voice, I'm sorry he has gone, but thank you for youtube as you say.
I'm going on holiday from Saturday. Searching for butterflies among other things! I hope it's a good year for butterflies too......!

Hello Buddy! I'm sure you're guarding the garden! Wruff!

    1. Hi Grethe! Those wild roses are so wonderful. There is a small group of them just down the road. I should go take their picture this evening. I haven't seen as many butterflies this year as last, but I'm hoping that will change.

Have a fun holiday. You go to a place at the sea, don't you?

Buddy says hello! He likes having friends from over the ocean... :)

  14. Dear Teresa, like you, I want a rose to smell as they did when I was growing up on the farm. The roses that people buy at the flower stores, the American Beauties, seem so anemic to me! Peace.
