A Riddle Wrapped in a Mystery Inside an Enigma

Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.

The surreal is but reality that has not been disconnected from its mystery.

To be a surrealist means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen, and being always on the lookout for what has never been.

All paintings and italicized quotes by Rene Magritte ( November 1898 - August 1967)

Thank you to Tony at http://www.neoclassics.blogspot.com/2012/12/empire-of-light-rene-magritte.html for posting the beautiful Magritte painting, "Empire of Light," which reminded me.

The title is alluding to a speech, "The Russian Enigma," given by Winston Churchill on October 1, 1939.

What is the true nature of reality?  That question continues to intrigue me....

  1. There is a scene in Star Trek: The Next Generation in which characters are talking about What It All Means, and Jean-Luc Picard says, as if the idea were absurd, "Maybe we are just characters playing out a scene in an electronic device for someone else's entertainment." Maybe indeed.

    1. OOOH, Jean-Luc, wasn't he the sexist thing? well, I thought so... :) And the idea of being characters in an electronic device is too close for comfort, especially considering that I'm "talking " to you on one right now....

  2. Teresa,
I heard the weather for MN and you are getting snow. We are getting our fair share even as I write. I just moved my car to the street. I got stuck in the drive last snowfall.

A pleasant quiet post as our falling snow accompanies it.
    Cheers

Sounds like things are good for you. Love hearing from you. I never think of the Minnesota Twins without thinking of you and Calvin now... :)

  3. Wow. Those paintings! Especially the one with the fire in the cave and the easel set up.

  4. Dear Teresa, now that you are posting more often, I find myself unable to keep up. But I've decided to come each day to your blog because I am so intrigued by what you write about--the array of interests, the viewpoints expressed, the poems you strew in our path, the paintings and photographs you use to illustrate your abiding curiosity in life.

So expect me back here tomorrow. Peace.

    1. It's the question that seems to supersede all other questions for me. As I get a better understanding of that one, everything becomes more illumined. IMHO.

  7. Hi Teresa,
I discovered your blog this afternoon, and have greatly enjoyed reading, thinking, reading, looking at photos and pictures, and reading some more! It was nice to see the surrealist paintings and to imagine a sky made of boxes, and little clouds drifting in and out of doors and windows!
Thank you for your blog, it is a delight to visit.
