Christmas Fireworks and Coyotes

Well, it's Saturday night in northern Minnesota, in mid-December, and I just came in from standing on the porch listening to fireworks in the distance, part of a local Christmas celebration. If I'd been willing to go to town I suppose I could have seen them. I wasn't willing. It's hard to remember Christmas is just around the corner when there's barely a drop of snow on the ground and it's in the 40's.

Buddy, who had been resting peacefully on the porch, was not real thrilled with this turn of events. The fireworks went off, he barked. The fireworks went off again, the coyotes howled. The whole thing was turning confusing to him so he opted for going inside and I went with him.

A few minutes later I'm here at the kitchen table, listening to and watching Joni Mitchell sing, Coyote, during, The Last Waltz, with The Band. I love this song and the video.

So, that's what I'm doing on this mid-December night. Hope you're having a good night, too. Here's Joni:

  1. I hope that Buddy appreciates Joni's music as much as I do. Being indoors listening to good songs is a fine way to pass a winter's evening.

  3. I've never heard this song. I didn't own many albums back then and only heard what Joni had on the radio and don't remember ever hearing anything like this. :) Well, they'd never play a five minute song on the radio back then.

It is sad that all the snow melted away. I am still praying for a white Christmas!! Fireworks and the holiday season just don't go together in my mind...unless I was down in Disney World. I'd go inside with Buddy, too. ;)

    1. I became a Joni fan later than most .... but this one remains a favorite .... you're so right about the length of song, they rarely played anything over three minutes :)

The rain turned to snow very briefly this morning then it all disappeared again ...

Yes, Buddy, as usual, had the right idea.

Wonderful video - but then I like everything by Joni (just as I like everything you write.)

    1. She is such a good songwriter ... so many of my favorites are from Canada. Along with Joni, there's Neil Young and Leonard Cohen ... they just don't get better than that ... imho. :)

So glad you came around this evening ... thanks for your lovely comment.

  5. Fireworks are quite the thing here for New Year's eve and the 4th, but I don't remember ever hearing them at Christmas. Of course, if I were out in the country, or in an unincorporated area, it might be different.

Like others, I've not heard the song, and it's quite wonderful. I'd not thought about my own fondness for Canadian singers, but I could add others: Ian and Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, k.d. Lang. They've all touched me for years.

    1. I'm not sure how fireworks got hooked into our local celebration but they did ... a parade, too. :) I keep my distance now but there was a time, many years ago, I lived on a busy corner in town in an old arts and crafts bungalow and lined my street with luminarias for the occasion .... that was then, this is now ... :)

Yes, so many wonderful singers/songwriters from Canada. Thanks for naming a few more ...

  7. That's a very good thing on a mid-December night. It doesn't seem like December here yet but it will soon and I will listen for the Coyotes.

  9. First of all, that image of Joni looking out of the window is really impressive and that song which I used to listen after midnight is a classic metaphorical exposition of human frailties....but we are still evolving, aren't we? :).

I really admire the beauty and solitude the blog header projecting. It reminds me of a place when I used to walk along a 'lonely..lonely... lonely' stretch at night, in a place which is still fresh in my mind...yet physically at a distance. Enjoyed reading this.

    1. That's one of my favorite Joni pictures ... and you've summarized that song quite well ... :) It reminds me where I've been ... not where i am and very grateful for it, but I do love to watch her sing and play guitar ... the whole vibe ... :))

Yes, I love that stretch of highway ...

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Always good to hear from you.
